Chevrolet introduced the Monte Carlo in 1970 to the personal luxury car market. The top performance Monte Carlo was the SS454. The SuperSport model was only offered for two years. All came with the performance LS5 version of the 4 barrel 454. Standard features for the 1971SS 454 included 15x7 Rally Wheels, dual exhaust and a 12 bolt rear gear. In 1971 with increasing government emissions ratings the compressiondropped from 10.25:1 to 8.5:1 with 365 rated horsepower. Magazine road tests from back in the day showed this power plant with 3.31:1 reargears was strong enough to move this large car to a 15.05 second quarter mile at 91.5 mph. The SS454 was never a big seller with only 1,919 ofthe total 128,600 Monte Carlos produced in 1971 making them a relatively rare site at a car show today.
