Dodge's Challenger project was first started in 1965 as their answer to the "pony" car. The next two years were spent refining the car and by 1968, the 1970 Challenger E-body prototypes were built. The E-body was meant to compete against cars like the Chevrolet Camaro and Ford mustang and do it while offering almost every engine in Chrysler's inventory. From the slant-six coupe to the R/T HEMI engines and with such options as the "Shaker" hood scoops, pistol-grip shifters and "Panther Pink" paint, the Challenger offered a lot of choices. It was well-recevied by the public and is still considered by many to be the ultimate expression of the muscle-car aesthetic.
